OVERVIEW

Jim Corbett National Park lies embraced by nature between the Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand. Spanning an expansive 1,318.54 square kilometres, the park is divided into a core area of 520 square kilometres and a buffer zone of 797.72 square kilometres. Established in 1936, it holds the distinction of being one of India’s oldest national parks and was originally known as Hailey National Park during the British era.

The man behind the forest’s protection

The park owes its existence to the pioneering conservationist Sir Jim Corbett. During colonial times, villagers lived in fear of man-eating tigers that roamed the region. Through years of observation, Corbett recognised that such behaviour arose only under specific conditions, often linked to injury or human provocation. His advocacy led to the creation of a protected refuge where tigers could live undisturbed. In 1956, the park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in his honour, and in 1973 it became the birthplace of India’s ambitious Project Tiger initiative.

Landscapes layered with natural abundance

Jim Corbett National Park is celebrated for its dramatic natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The park supports nearly 600 species of plants, with sal forests forming the dominant canopy. This vast and thriving ecosystem has long made Corbett a preferred destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.

Avian rarities and river life

The park shelters an exceptional variety of birdlife, including rare species such as the white backed vulture and the hornbill. Flowing through the heart of the reserve, the Ramganga River sustains diverse aquatic and avian life, including the Pallas’s fish eagle, golden oriole, Indian pitta, king cobra, alligators, and crocodiles, adding further depth to the park’s ecological richness.

Mountains, rivers and adventure

The scenic presence of the Shivalik range and the nearby Kosi River elevates the atmosphere of Jim Corbett, lending a sense of grandeur to its forests and grasslands. Beyond wildlife viewing, the region offers a range of adventure experiences such as rappelling, angling, rock climbing, river rafting, and fishing, appealing to travellers seeking both thrill and tranquillity.

Safari etiquette and responsible exploration

Visitors are required to carry valid identification during safaris and are expected to follow strict conservation guidelines. Non-biodegradable waste and non-vegetarian food are prohibited inside the park. Guests are encouraged to maintain silence, wear khaki or olive-green clothing, avoid entering forest zones after sunset, and refrain from feeding wildlife, ensuring the sanctity of the jungle remains undisturbed.

Luxury stays amid untamed surroundings

Jim Corbett offers an impressive selection of upscale resorts designed to blend comfort with wilderness. Accommodations such as The Le Roi Resort, Ramganga Resort, Corbett Riverside Resort, Maya The Forest and Spa Resort, Wood Castle Resort, and The Den Corbett provide modern amenities, refined interiors, and serene settings that allow guests to unwind after immersive jungle experiences.

Culinary journeys rooted in the region

Dining in Corbett is a celebration of diverse flavours, with resort kitchens offering Continental, Chinese, Mughlai, Kumaoni, North Indian, and local cuisines. Grilled specialities such as kebabs and barbeque dishes are particularly popular, while regional delicacies like Bhang ki Khatai, Aloo ke Gutke, Rus, and Sisunak Saag offer an authentic taste of Uttarakhand.
